Picture this: it's golden hour, your toddler just giggled on cue, the dog is (miraculously) sitting still, and even Dad has that "okay, this is kinda fun" look on his face. Now imagine all of this happening in a location that perfectly fits your family’s style, energy, and vibe.

As a photographer who spends a lot of time chasing children through tall grasses and coaxing dogs out from behind picnic tables, I know just how much the right setting can elevate your photo session. So today, I'm excited to share something I've been working on behind the scenes… my one-stop shop for favorite Milwaukee-area photo locations!

This isn’t a list pulled from Pinterest or a glossy magazine. These are my tried-and-true, tested-with-toddlers, pet-friendly (and husband-approved!) spots that I love returning to again and again. Whether you’re planning for a mini session, family shoot, milestone moment, engagement photos, or something more spontaneous, you’ll find a location that fits!

Here’s the thing: family photos are about so much more than a pretty backdrop.

They’re about setting the scene for connection. For real-life laughter. For that moment when your son forgets he doesn’t like having his picture taken and throws his arms around you just because he can.

That’s why I never choose locations based only on what looks cute. I want places that feel right for the kinds of moments we’re capturing - whether that’s running down a tree-lined trail or cuddling by the lake.

Over the fall, I did a fun little blog series diving into some of my favorite local locations. After chatting with a few clients who were overwhelmed trying to pick a spot, I realized this resource needed to live all in one place. So consider this your behind-the-scenes tour of my go-to photography spots in and around Greendale, WI.

Below are some of the places I return to again and again - not because they’re all flashy, but because they work. For kids. For pets. And for that fifth-grader who’s “too cool” for photos. Each location below links to a detailed blog post with images from real sessions and tips about what makes each space special.

If you’ve ever tried to wrangle toddlers, dogs, snacks, backup outfit #3, and a reluctant spouse, then you know that not all pretty places are actually family-friendly. Here’s what I look for when selecting a session location:

Easy Parking (Because no one wants a meltdown in a 20-minute hike-in spot)

A location loses major points if it takes more effort to park than it does to get everyone dressed. All of the listed spots have close and accessible parking - because I know that’s key when you're carrying snacks in one hand and bribery jellybeans in the other.

Room to Move

Kids move. A lot. So I look for wide open spaces with trails, bridges, or rock walls that double as entertainment. It helps keep energy upbeat, which means more opportunities for authentic moments (and less of the “stand and smile!" battles).

Light, Glorious Light

Each of these locations has some dreamy natural lighting, especially in golden hour. Whether it’s filtered through the trees or bouncing off lake water, light really does make all the difference - and I always time sessions around the best glow.

Good Distractions

Yes, sometimes distractions are a good thing. That squirrel sprinting across the path? An unexpected dose of giggles. That tall grass your daughter is twirling through? Magic.
