Ever tried describing a location’s “vibe” without sounding like a weather forecaster or a poet? Believe me, I’ve attempted all the metaphors when clients ask where they should have their portraits taken. The reality is, sometimes you just have to see it to believe it. That’s why I’m creating this location series - to peel back the curtain and show you exactly what some of my favorite Southeast Wisconsin photo spots have to offer.
This fourth post in the series focuses on one of my most reliable, versatile favorites: Lions Legend Park in Franklin, WI. Whether you're wrangling a toddler with a snack emergency, a pup with a wild streak, or a partner who's not exactly thrilled to be in front of the camera, this park has the kind of flexible, welcoming layout that works wonders for real family life.
Let’s take a little photography stroll, shall we?
Here’s a photography truth bomb: not every location needs to have blooming wildflowers and golden hour glow to look amazing. Some of the best spots are the ones that show up for us even when Wisconsin weather decides to be... Wisconsin weather.
That’s exactly why Lions Legend Park has earned a spot in my photographer’s heart. Over the years, I’ve brought families here through wind, chill, cloud cover, and... more chill. And you know what? It still delivers every single time.
Part of what makes this park so special is that it’s more than just another green space. Between the rustic barns, timeless buildings, and open areas perfect for play, there are layers to this park that photograph beautifully - whether we're knee-deep in summer color or bundling up in cozy fall layers.
Why I Recommend Lions Legend Park for Family Photos
A Built-In Variety Show of Backgrounds
Looking for rustic charm? Pop in front of the barn. Prefer a timeless, natural look? Let's nestle you into a grove of graceful trees. Want clean, classic lines with a modern feel? The buildings here offer just enough texture and variety to let your family's connection shine.
This spot has so many backdrop options that I often move seamlessly from one setup to another with the same family - without needing to drive across town. (And let’s be honest, when toddlers are involved, fewer car seat straps equals fewer meltdowns.)
Kid + Pet Friendly (With Room to Burn Off That Wiggle Energy)
Busy parents, I see you. I am you. That’s why I always choose spots where kids can let loose a little between the "smile at the lady with the camera" moments. Lions Legend Park has wide open space for running, twirling, and even the occasional spontaneous leaf-throwing victory dance.
Got a doggo who needs a minute to adjust? Let them sniff out the area while we capture a few shots with mom and dad. Bonus tip: There are a couple of playgrounds on-site. I've even had parents give kids a five-minute play break while we sneak in sweet couple shots with the pups. It was genius. (Note: only recommended if you really trust your kiddos to circle back.)
Works Beautifully Year-Round
One of the reasons this park is in my top-tier lineup is because it doesn’t rely on blooming flowers or spring-green trees to look good. That means family photo sessions can happen long after the leaves have dropped, and you still get a beautifully textured, interesting gallery.
Some of my favorite late fall and early spring sessions have been here because the buildings offer warm, grounding tones that bring so much depth to your portraits - without needing nature to be in its full glory.
It’s Comfortable and Convenient (Read: Dad-Approved)
Look, I know soft sell tactics are a must when getting dads excited about family photo day. The last thing anyone wants is a photo session that feels stiff or awkward. Lions Legend Park takes the pressure off. With its casual layout and the space to move, it doesn’t feel too "posed" or fancy.
We laugh, we play, we occasionally chase someone heading the wrong direction (usually under age 6), and we always end up with candid, connection-filled shots that feel just like you. I’ve had multiple dads walk away from this location highly surprised at how fun and painless it actually was. That’s a huge win in my book.
At the heart of it, every location I choose comes back to connection. I’m not looking for perfection. I’m looking for play, squeeze-hugs, crinkly-eyed smiles, and glimpses of who your family really is right now - in this exact stage.
Lions Legend Park gives us space to be silly, space to pause, and space to roam - all things that help you relax and bring your full, beautiful selves into the frame. And that’s exactly where the magic happens.
If you’ve been thinking “Alright, I just want to get one decent photo for the holiday card without losing my sanity,” this spot is for you. If you’ve got little ones with big personalities and short attention spans... also for you. If you have a dog, a snack bag, and a partner who asked “How long will this take?” - yes, still for you.
I photograph here often because it checks all the boxes for busy families - variety, ease, space, charm, and just enough rustic flair to make your gallery feel timeless and special. If you’re looking for an easygoing, fun-loving family session location near Franklin, WI or surrounding areas, Lions Legend Park might just be the exact spot your family needs.
