Picture this: golden sunlight filtering through tall pines, little footprints in the sand, and a breeze just strong enough to tousle your kiddo’s hair in that perfectly candid way. Sounds dreamy, right? That’s exactly why I tucked Muskego Park Beach into my list of go-to spots.


I started this location series to help answer one of the questions I get almost every time a family books a session with me: "Where should we take our photos?" And honestly, I get it! It’s tough to know how a place will actually photograph and what the vibe will be when you’ve only seen a photo or two online.


So today, I’m guiding you through another one of my favorite hidden gems in our corner of Wisconsin: Muskego Park Beach. It has a little bit of everything - tall trees, soft grasses, golden light - and just enough surprise to keep things interesting!

I know how it goes. You've finally convinced your husband to show up in matching (but not too matching) outfits, your toddler is more gremlin than child because they missed nap time, and now you’ve gotta play location scout on top of it all? That’s a lot.


That’s exactly why I started this series - to make location planning one less thing on your already-packed to-do list. My hope is that this gives you a real peek into what a session might look like at each spot, so when you're scrolling my booking calendar thinking, “Should we go for something woodsy or beachy?” you’ll have a visual roadmap.


Fun fact: Muskego Park Beach actually brings both!! And thanks to its tucked-away nature, it avoids some of the high traffic and noise levels you might get at more popular photo locations.

What Makes Muskego Park Beach a Hidden Gem

A Forest Feel Without the Crowds

If you’re a fan of Retzer Nature Center but aren’t super into jostling with joggers or babysitting your three-year-old near a photographer's tripod, this park is a dream. Muskego Park Beach has these towering pine trees that feel almost magical at golden hour… and bonus: it's usually less busy. Same great tall trees and dreamy light, fewer curious onlookers.


Wide-Open Fields? Yes, Please.

Tucked behind the woods is this open field that glows in the fall. Think warm oranges and golden browns, ideal for those cozy, natural family portraits where your toddler is collecting leaves and your dog is bounding through grass with pure glee.


It’s the kind of spot where your photos end up looking effortlessly beautiful - because the backdrop is doing half the work for us!


The Beach Option (Without the Summer Hustle)

I’ll admit: I haven't scheduled many summer sessions here yet, mostly because I worried about crowds. But here’s the sneaky secret… if you aim for a golden hour session in the evening, especially in late summer or early fall, the beach is usually pretty calm.


So if you’re after that dreamy barefoot-in-the-sand photo or you've always wanted that sun-dipped silhouette shot, this could totally be the spot - especially when it’s not swimming-prime time.


So Much Variety in One Location

Want one location that feels like three? Muskego Park Beach delivers woodsy, open, and sandy in a single visit. This is especially great for mini sessions or shorter sessions - we don’t have to drive around or lose light moving from one spot to another. It's a one stop shop for beautiful backdrops.


And if your kids are anything like mine, lack of walking to a secondary, or even third location, makes a big difference in their willingness to stay in the game.

The truth? It’s not just about hills or trees or where the sun sets... it’s about what those places inspire.
