You know that magical moment when the sun dips just enough to cast a golden glow over a wide field, your kiddo is grabbing your hand for one more spin, and even your dog has that proud “yep, I’m part of this” look? That’s the exact kind of thing I adore capturing during family sessions at Wehr Nature Center in Franklin, WI.

If you've ever found yourself wondering, "Where should we take our next family photos where the light’s just right, the views are beautiful year-round, and our dog can tag along too?"... well, you're in for a treat. This is the first post in my new series where I spotlight some of my favorite photo locations around the Greendale area. I’ve learned that photos don’t just happen in front of a camera - they happen in places that allow your family to relax, move, and connect.

So let’s kick things off with a natural gem that never lets me down: Wehr Nature Center.

A flowing royal blue dress creates an ethereal effect against a natural backdrop of tall grass and wildflowers.

I totally get it - choosing where to take your family photos can feel like a big decision. Moms ask me all the time, “Where do you recommend?” And honestly, it’s not just about what's in the background. It’s about the vibe of a place, the way the evening light filters through the trees or reflects off a stone wall, and whether your toddler will have space to move without too many spectators.

Wehr Nature Center checks all of those boxes and more. I know it’s hard to imagine how a field or trail might look in a still photo - so I wanted to start this location series to show you, not just tell you.

And truthfully? The photographer (that’s me) nerds out a little bit over the way the sunlight hits the tall grasses here in late summer. But don’t worry, it’s not all about aesthetics. It’s also about creating an experience that feels downright enjoyable for your whole family.

Let’s take a peek at what makes this spot so special!

The Golden-Hour Glow in the Tall Grass Field

This tall grass field behind the Nature Center is one of my go-tos, especially right before the sun sets. Picture this: small hills, soft golden light, and your family framed by wispy grasses that practically shimmer. That glow you see in some of my favorite galleries? Yep, this is where the magic happens.

And the best part? Even families who are a little camera-shy wind up loving the natural feel here. Kids can twirl in the open space and pets can enjoy a bit of freedom without needing to stay leashed to a bench.

Variety of Backdrops - No Leaves, No Problem

We’re in Wisconsin, folks. Trees don’t always cooperate (especially in the dead of winter), but Wehr still shows up. I love the texture of the stone wall and the view overlooking the lake - even when the trees are bare.

Whether it’s the fiery fall leaves, crisp snow-covered trails, or the “just starting to bloom” charm of early spring, this location evolves beautifully with the seasons.

Trails That Leave Room to Roam (and Avoid the Crowds)

Wehr has a network of small trails that truly shine during photo sessions with young kids and curious pets. If your little one needs a movement break (don’t they all?), there’s space to walk without having to stop every minute to let joggers pass.

Plus, because there are so many off-the-path options, we can often find quieter corners to settle into - which helps everyone feel a bit more at ease.

Permits and Planning: What You Need to Know

OK, real talk: there is a permit fee to photograph here. It’s a small one, but it’s something I always flag when families are narrowing down their choices. That said, I truly think it’s worth it for the beauty and variety this location offers.

We’ll handle the logistics together so you don’t have to stress about the paperwork.

I’ve captured everything here from glowing maternity sessions in midwinter, to spontaneous laugh-fests during fall family minis, to milestone moments for toddlers who decided. Wehr Nature Center lets me do what I love most: highlight the sweet, silly, and heartfelt connections within your family. Whether the sun is shining or we're bundled into coats, it's always about preserving your story - not perfection.

If you’re dreaming of family photos that feel relaxed and personal, this spot is definitely worth considering.

If you're nodding along, thinking, "OK, this sounds like something my family needs," I’d love to help make it happen. Whether you’re planning for fall minis, a sweet maternity shoot, or just want to freeze this season before your toddler becomes a teenager overnight, Wehr Nature Center might just be your spot.

You can check out more details about my sessions on the pricing page of my website, or get on the email list to be the first to know when I open up seasonal minis!
