What if I told you one of my favorite photo spots lives in the back corner of a hospital parking lot? I know, it sounds like the set-up to a joke, but I promise - it’s anything but. The Conservancy for Healing and Heritage in Franklin, WI might just be the best-kept secret around here for family photos.

As a photographer who’s simultaneously wrangling a camera, toddlers, and occasionally a skeptical dad or wiggling pup, I’m always looking for spots that feel right. Places where lighting hits like magic, locations that invite play and connection, and scenery that offers flexibility for both posed and candid moments.

This gorgeous little pocket nestled on a hiking trail just off the beaten path? It checks all my boxes - every single one. Let's dive into why this Franklin photo location needs to be on your radar.

If you've ever agonized over where to do your family photos, you’re not alone. I get asked this question all the time: Where should we shoot our session? And honestly, I get it. Choosing a location isn't just about what's pretty - it's about access, how your family will feel while you're there, what the lighting will do, and, of course, what kind of backdrop complements your family's unique vibe.

That’s why I’ve started a location series right here on my blog. So instead of trying to imagine how your toddler might look snuggled on a rock or chasing leaves down a walking trail, I can just show you with real photos from real families, taken at the very spots I love most.

And today? We’re heading to The Conservancy.

Why I Love Shooting at The Conservancy for Healing and Heritage

Hello, Gorgeous Variety

One of the things that makes this location a dream is the range of backdrops all in one space. There's a walking trail with an archway-esque path of trees that naturally frames families so beautifully. It's one of my absolute favorite setups because it creates this cozy, tucked-in feeling - like the trees themselves are giving you a hug.

Then there are large natural rocks that are perfect for sitting photos - think kids giggling on laps, pets perched semi-politely beside toddlers, and siblings swinging legs while holding hands. There’s also this incredible chapel that brings in some architectural charm, and an overlook that practically glows during fall.

But here's the secret: even when the leaves are gone in late fall or early spring, the stonework and textures here make it just as stunning. Every season brings something new.

It's Quiet, But Not Too Quiet

It's still relatively unknown, which means it doesn't get the same crowd as bigger parks in Franklin or Greendale. That said, its charm is catching on (the good ones never stay secrets forever!), so depending on the day, you might find one or two other families doing photos, or folks out for a peaceful hike.

But unlike busier locations, there’s never too much foot traffic to work around. Plus, parking is close and accessible - no trekking miles with juice boxes, pet leashes, and spare outfits. You're pretty much able to step out of your car and be in location-ready space within seconds. That’s a big-time win for busy moms juggling all the things.

It Creates a Relaxed, Natural Vibe

Let’s be honest: if your toddler is going to have a meltdown, it's probably going to happen 12 minutes into your photo session. But the energy of this place is calming. I've seen more than one little one be so distracted by leaves, pinecones, or waving to hikers that they totally forget to worry about the camera.

The natural layout of The Conservancy makes it easy for me to guide you through the session without it feeling forced. There’s room to move, to scoot kids into sunlight, to create little candid moments without staging everything. Which, if you know my style, is exactly what I aim for.

Why This All Matters (Hint: It’s Not Just About Pretty Pictures)

Here’s the truth: you deserve more than just a good photo. You deserve a good experience getting there. That means no location panic, no dragging reluctant dads through crowded parks, no worrying whether the backdrop will match your vibe. It’s why I fall in love with places like The Conservancy - because it creates the ease and comfort that helps your family just be so I can do what I love most: capture your connection in this exact stage of life.

So if you’re a Franklin or Greendale family wondering where to take your next round of photos together (bonus points if you’re bringing your favorite four-legged chaos monster), this little gem might be exactly where you need to go!
