In this seventh post of my location series, I’m sharing another one of my favorite session spots: Retzer Nature Center in Waukesha, WI. Not only is it stunning across all four seasons, but it also offers something rare and wonderful for all stages of life–a flexible, photo-friendly backdrop that shines even on “imperfect” weather days (yes, I’m looking at you, unpredictable Wisconsin falls). Whether you’re planning maternity photos, celebrating a little one’s milestone, or wrangling the whole family (puppy included), this spot delivers where it counts.

If I had a nickel for every time golden hour saved the day... well, I could probably fund my coffee addiction! At Retzer, the open fields mixed with the tree-lined trails create perfect conditions for that sun-kissed glow photographers dream about.
But here’s the key: I usually start sessions two hours before sunset, not closer. As the sun dips lower, the tree shadows can start to gobble up all that lovely light, especially around the wooded parts. The sweet spot is earlier than you might expect—but the results? Chef’s kiss.

They’ll be the ones where your daughter laughs uncontrollably because the dog licked her ear, where your son “helps” with a pinecone collection, and where you catch your partner smiling at the chaos like it’s beautiful. Because it is.
