Do you go for something with grit and texture (brick, steel, city energy) or do you want something wide open, soft, and surrounded by nature? Both are valid. Both are beautiful. But the answer really depends on your personality and that's where the conversation gets interesting.


In my experience, seniors who feel most like themselves in an urban setting thrive at a place like Trestle Park in downtown Milwaukee. There's movement, there's edge, there's character in every corner. Seniors who lean more toward something organic and open tend to shine at For the Love of Flowers Farm in Franksville. Golden hour at that farm is honestly something special… the kind of light that makes every frame feel warm and a little magical.

What I love most about both of these spots is the room they give us to move, explore, and play. That variety shows up in the final gallery in a big way. Some of my absolute favorite senior sessions have happened at these two locations for exactly that reason.


Here's where I'll be honest with you. A lot of seniors (and parents!) pick a location based on what looks popular or pretty in someone else's photos. Golden fields, a random park, a brick wall downtown. There's nothing wrong with any of those but if the location doesn't mean anything to you, that can show up in the photos.

This one is underrated and I wish more seniors did it. Take the time to drive out to your potential location around the same time of day your session would be scheduled. See what the light looks like. See how the space feels. Does it match what you had in your head? Sometimes it does, and sometimes you realize pretty quickly that it's not quite right… and that's perfectly okay.

 

Give yourself permission to change your mind

If you scoped out a location and something feels off, trust that instinct. You're not locked in until we're actually there. It's so much better to shift plans than to spend your whole session somewhere that doesn't feel like you.

 

Pick somewhere you can actually let loose

This is probably the most important piece of advice I can give you. If you're stiff or self-conscious because the environment feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable, that tension will show up in your photos. Choose a location where you can breathe, move around, laugh, and just be yourself. Your personality is what makes senior photos worth taking, and the right location helps that shine through.
