Every year, I look forward to photographing this family! The mom has a gift for planning themes for birthday photos that are truly memorable. She doesn't just show up with an outfit and a smile, she shows up with a vision. Her daughter's birthday sessions have taken me to horse farms with golden-hour light to afternoon sessions with princess dresses and the kind of dramatic flair that would make any stylist jealous. I truly look forward to what she comes up with each year for a new theme.
So when her son's first birthday came around, I genuinely had no idea what to expect but I knew it would be a blast! No cake smash on the horizon... Instead: barbecue! Real, honest, pulled-from-a-local-spot barbecue with mac & cheese, ribs, pulled pork and all the fixings laid out in front of one very enthusiastic one-year-old who had absolutely no qualms about digging in. The best part? Mom was fully on board with letting him get messy. And that changed everything.
I've photographed more cake smashes than I can count, and the sessions that really sing are the ones where the kid is all in! When a little one approaches the cake with hesitation, a single finger dab, a cautious sniff, you can still get beautiful photos, but you have to work harder for the magic. This little guy needed zero convincing. He went straight for the mac & cheese, grabbed a rib, pulled at the pork, and essentially ate a little bit of everything in front of him with pure, uninhibited joy. The barbecue sauce on his cheeks. The mac & cheese in his hair. The expression on his face: absolute bliss and silliness abounding!
These are the sessions that remind me why I love what I do. The ones where the family has thought past the Pinterest board and asked: what actually represents who we are right now? For this family, it was slow-smoked barbecue from a spot they love, laid out for their son to explore on his own terms. Priceless doesn't even cover it!
Think outside the cake: alternative first birthday smash ideas
After this session, I couldn't stop thinking about all the creative directions a first birthday smash can go. If the traditional cake just doesn't feel like your family, here are some ideas worth considering:
Spaghetti smash
A heaping bowl of pasta makes for gloriously messy, colorful photos… and babies love noodles.
Pie smash
Seasonal and beautiful. A berry pie in summer or a pumpkin pie in fall creates a stunning, warm palette.
Fruit & veggie smash
A cornucopia of colorful produce, perfect for the family who eats clean and wants photos that reflect it.
Donut smash
A tower of donuts is visually playful and allows for lots of texture, glaze, and sprinkle-covered chaos.
Lego Hulk smash
Build a whole cityscape and let your little one knock it down. Dramatic, playful, and completely unforgettable.
Ice cream smash
Scoops, cones, and drips that melt in real time — a summer session dream with a built-in clock.
The common thread in all of these? Lean into what your family actually loves. The best milestone photos don't just document an age. They tell the story of this kid, this family, this moment in time. And the messier they're willing to get, the better your gallery is going to be.
