Spring can be one of the most beautiful time for family photos! Buds are starting to bloom and here in the suburbs on Milwaukee, Wisconsin, we have some of the most beautiful crab apple and magnolia trees in Whitnall Park. I have been falling over myself with how beautiful these trees are and the gorgeous background they make for family photos since I found them four years ago.
The trouble with spring photos, especially in Wisconsin, is that the weather is completely unpredictable. It seems to be a common Midwest joke, that the weather here can’t make up it’s mind. We could have a 75 degree day in February and a snow storm in mid-March… which literally just happened as we went into Spring Break this year. With this wavering weather, can we really blame the trees for avoiding consistency in when they bloom??

Because of this, scheduling Spring Mini Sessions to catch this beautiful landscape is extremely tricky. It seems the best you can do as a family photographer, is schedule April and May dates and hope for the best! The most convenient thing to do if you want these beautiful blooms, is schedule a regular session for springtime and maintain as much flexibility through April and May as possible. These gorgeous trees tend to bloom for only a week so by keeping the date tentative, you can work with your photographer to catch the trees in their most blossomed state.
That’s not exactly what this extended family did, although we did flex the time somewhat to avoid the spring rain. Having the eldest generation coming in from out of town, we decided on a date that happened to fall on one of the best possible weekends to catch the crab apple trees in bloom. Lucky for us, the spring weather [mostly] cooperated and we got the beautiful scenery of a Wisconsin spring!

Not only did we catch the crab apple trees of Whitnall Park in full bloom but, because they scheduled a full session, we were able to catch both colors of trees that are available. The white trees are a clean classic but if you want a little more pop to your backdrop, the pink petals are a great touch.
