Ever feel like you’re choosing between two equally adorable outfits for your baby and just can't decide? That’s a bit like picking between a studio or a lifestyle newborn photo session. Both are beautiful in their own way, but which one tells your family’s story best?


I’ve been lucky to photograph newborns in both cozy homes near Greendale, WI and sun-drenched studio spaces, and each session brings its own brand of magic. One that sticks in my memory was with a family who had just moved into their dream home. Their living room sparkled with holiday decor, their three dogs (yes, three!) joined the photos, and we captured the kind of real-life joy that can only happen in your own space.


Another time, a studio session gave us the perfect light and calm environment where big sister even got behind the camera to “help” me photograph mom and dad (still giggling about that one). So how do you choose between the two? Great question. Let’s unpack it together!

Planning a session while caring for a newborn can feel like assembling IKEA furniture without instructions, tricky and a little overwhelming when you're already running on snuggles and low sleep. Should you stay home, where baby’s used to the surroundings? Or venture out to a beautiful, light-filled studio where you don’t have to tidy up your living room or hide the dog toys?


Here’s the thing: you can’t go wrong! But depending on your family’s vibe, your space, and what you're hoping to document, one might suit you just a smidge better. Let's break it down...

What’s the Real Difference?

Look & Lighting

  • Studio Sessions: Studios are typically full of gorgeous natural light and neutral backdrops that work well no matter your home decor style. The result? Clean, glowing images. You don’t have to stress about clutter, lighting, or whether the Christmas decorations are still on the fireplace in April.
  • In-Home Lifestyle Sessions: These feel more personalized and emotional. You're in your little one's very first home - and that matters! Whether it’s the rocking chair where you’ve cozied up for 3 a.m. feeds or the nursery you lovingly decorated, those details add so much heart to your gallery. Lighting may vary, but don’t worry, I always bring equipment to ensure we still get that creamy, true-to-life glow.

 

The Story Your Photos Tell

  • Studio = Simplicity & Focus on Baby: Studio photos tend to highlight your baby in a more timeless, focused way. We’ll pull in a few wraps and props (I bring a bunch and I’ve got a blog of all the options here if you want a sneak peek), and the backgrounds won’t fight for attention.
  • In-Home = Full Family Vibe: Want to include those sweet pups? Show off your newly-renovated kitchen or holiday decorations? An in-home session showcases your lifestyle, your real-life story with a newborn in tow.

 

Convenience

  • Studio Bonus: You walk in, I handle everything (no sweeping dog hair or tossing laundry behind doors). You enjoy a calm space and I guide you every step of the way.
  • In-Home Bonus: You skip the car seat shuffle and don't need to pack a diaper bag the size of your toddler. Plus, big siblings usually feel more relaxed in their own space and pets love being part of the fun too.

 

Including Pets & Siblings

  • Have dogs or younger siblings? In-home sessions make it so much easier to incorporate everyone without feeling like you're directing a Broadway ensemble (although, I do have some musical theatre chops if we need a pep talk or a sing-along break).

That said, we can absolutely make adorable family moments happen in a studio too. It just depends on what kind of “chaos” you’re up for wrangling that day.

  • Do I love the idea of highlighting our home, pets, and nursery? Go in-home.
  • Do I need a tidy, no-fuss experience where everything is already set? Let's chat studio.


Both options will result in a gallery packed with snuggles, sweet gaze-holding moments, and those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it newborn details like tiny toes and sleepy yawns.


At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you’re in the photos, soaking in this new little life you created. Trust me, it doesn’t matter if there’s a laundry basket in the corner or a pacifier falling out of someone's mouth (I'm looking at you, baby #2). You’ll never regret being in the frame!
