When you’re planning a wedding, it’s easy to focus on checking boxes: the timeline, the dinner, the dance, and making sure your guests are having a great time. No matter what way you slice it, the day is full of hub bub where you are basically on the go from getting ready until your last dance of the night. But there’s one quiet moment in the day that I always encourage couples to put aside time for: sunset!
Last summer I photographed a sweet couple who was having a blast at their reception dancing the night away with all their guests. I must admit, even I was having fun out on the dance floor photographing everyone so I understood why it felt like a tough choice to leave, even for a few minutes. My second photographer and I gently encouraged them to trust us—and wow, was it worth it.
The reception venue was mostly parking lot with a small gazebo and outside area. But to the entrance of the parking lot, off the main road, we found a small open field bathed in golden light for gorgeous sunset photos. Everything ended up looking magical as the bride and groom walked through the field. The few minutes we took to slip away turned into some of the most breathtaking images of the entire day. And since we were already out, we even took an extra minute to photograph the groom with his car that he so admires. This made the day even more personal and meaningful for them.

Not sure if you want to have sunset photos taken on your wedding day?! Hear me out… I’m giving you three reasons why you definitely, no questions asked, should take fifteen minutes to get some bride and groom photos taken at sunset!
You get a private moment together
No one ever wants it to but your wedding day goes by so fast and you’re constantly surrounded by people. Sunset portraits offer a rare chance to be alone on this special day, just the two of you. No explanations, no toasts, no camera phones in your face (just mine!). It’s a moment to breathe, hold hands, and soak in the joy of being married.
Epic lighting
Golden hour isn’t just a photographer’s buzzword… it’s the real deal! The soft, warm light at sunset is flattering, romantic, and timeless. It creates the kid of dreamy, almost cinematic, images you’ll cherish forever.
Unforgettable moments
Some of the most genuine smiles and intimate moments happen during this quiet escape. Whether you’re walking through a field or simply wrapped in each other’s arms, sunset gives you the space to be yourselves—without an audience. Fall in love all over again on your wedding day during these sunset photos!
