Picture this:
It’s Saturday morning. Shoes have mysteriously disappeared, the toddler won’t wear anything besides superhero pajamas, and your dog thinks the diaper bag is a snack dispenser. It's photo day. You're wondering, “Why did I think this was a good idea again?”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. As a Greendale family photographer who’s worked with dozens of families just like yours, I’ve seen it all - from mismatched socks and yogurt-stained shirts to hesitant dads and off-script toddlers. But here’s the thing: those “chaotic” moments often turn into the most memorable images.
Preparing for your first professional family session doesn't have to feel like preparing for a space launch. With a little guidance (and maybe a fruit snack or two), it can actually be - dare I say it - fun.
I totally get it. Booking a session probably sounded like a great idea back when everyone was smiling and fed. But now you're staring at your closet wondering if your youngest owns anything without ketchup on it.
Here’s the deal: most of the stress around family photography stems from the expectation of perfection. I'm here to tell you - give yourself permission to let that go. Instead, focus on what really matters: connection, laughter, and a little bit of flexibility.
There are so many photo sessions that hit all the classic challenges: a toddler meltdown mid-session, a skeptical dad who thought he'd just have to "tolerate" the hour, and a dog who howled anytime we tried to keep him out of the frame. And yet? That gallery turned out to be one of the most joyful of the season. Why? Because the family leaned into it. They trusted the process, let go of the idea of a “perfect shot,” and embraced the fun.
Now it's your turn.
Let’s walk through a few simple steps that will set you up to feel confident walking into your session - and leave you feeling ecstatic when you see your photos.
1. Choose Outfits That Match Your Vibe (Not Just Each Other)
If you’re staring into the abyss of your closet thinking, “Wait, we have to match?” don’t panic. I’m not looking for Pinterest-perfect outfit combos here. What I do recommend:
- Choose 2-3 main colors you love, then build from there. Neutrals with pops of color (like soft greens or warm rusts) are always a safe bet.
- Avoid logos, neon, or anything that might make Uncle Joe say, “Whoa.”
- Let everyone stay comfy. If your toddler hates jeans, ditch the jeans! Happy kids > “aesthetic” outfits.
Still not sure? I’m always happy to help pull options together based on what you already have.
2. Bribery Is Not Only Allowed - It’s Encouraged
Yes, I’m that photographer who fully supports a well-timed lollipop or gummy bear surprise. A little reward can go a long way, especially when we’re trying to keep focus during the second half of a session.
If your kiddo starts losing steam, we’ll switch it up. I use fun prompts and movement-based shots that feel more like games than posing. It’s basically a dance party disguised as a photo shoot.
3. Prep Your Partner, Too
Let’s talk about the dads. Many of them show up thinking they just have to get through it. And nine times out of ten, they leave saying something like, “That was actually kind of fun.”
Key tip: let your partner know this won’t be stiff or overly serious. It’s fast-paced, playful, and often peppered with bad music jokes or epic toddler moves. They don’t have to fake smile for an hour. I’ll guide them through everything with easy direction and good humor.
4. Relax the Schedule (and Your Shoulders)
The goal isn’t for your kids to perform. The goal is to capture your family as you are - giggles, cuddles, tantrums, and all. Come ready to laugh, snuggle, and let the moment unfold without pressure.
Kids feed off our energy. If you’re stressed, they will be too. But if you show up ready to have fun and embrace the chaos, they’ll follow your lead.
Need to bring the favorite stuffed animal? Do it. Want to stop and regroup mid-session? That’s normal! This Wisconsin girl has wrangled her share of tiny tornadoes.
5. Trust the Process
The camera can be intimidating, I know. But you don’t have to know what to do. That’s what I’m here for.
Throughout the session, I’ll guide you with easy prompts, gently direct your poses, and help your natural connections shine. One minute we might be playing peek-a-boo with your baby, the next you're wrapped in a snuggle sandwich with your kids. Don’t worry - we’ll get that frame-worthy shot of everyone looking, but we’ll also capture candid, feel-it-in-your-heart moments that tell your story.
Because It’s More Than Just Photos
Preparing for family photos isn’t really about the outfits or the smiles. It’s about capturing this wild, beautiful chapter of your family’s story. Someday soon, today’s tantrum will be a memory, and you’ll be looking back on these photos with that “remember this?” kind of smile.
Whether it’s your first session or your fifth, I’m here to make it easy, stress-free, and actually (gasp!) enjoyable. Let’s celebrate your family’s unique connection - superhero pajamas, snack breaks, and all.
