In-home newborn sessions are so special because of the personal aspect captured in the photos where you brought your new family member home to. It’s familiar, comfortable, and significant to you and your growing family. But when you decide to have your newborn photos taken in your home you’re faced with the question: which room is best to capture these once in a lifetime moments?

As a family photographer based in Greendale, WI, specializing in photographing families with young children, I understand the importance of selecting the right spaces to ensure beautiful and authentic photos. Here are just a few of my favorite spots within home to photograph growing families.

The Master Bedroom

This room often serves as a sanctuary for the family, offering a cozy and intimate space for bonding moments. The bed, typically large enough for the whole family to snuggle on (including pups), proves the perfect backdrop for capturing those tender family moments. Whether it’s cuddling up with your newborn or sharing sweet glances with your partner, the master bedroom offers a serene setting for timeless photos. And think of the memories you’ll continue to have when your newborn turns into a toddler and starts sneaking in to wake you up in the morning but ultimately just turns into a cuddle session because the grownups don’t want to wake up yet… is that just our family? Wait for it. It’s a pretty awesome time.

The Living Room

As the heart of the home, the living room holds countless memories of family gatherings, movie nights, and everyday moments shared together. Opting for photos in this familiar space adds an authentic touch to your session, allowing you to relax and be yourselves. Whether it’s lounging on the sofa or playing with your little one of the rug, the living room provides ample opportunities for candid and heartfelt photos. Take advantage before the area is overrun with toys and trinkets you’re tripping on when your littles take over the living room space.

The Nursery

Especially for newborn sessions, the nursery holds a special significance. It’s where you spent countless hours preparing for your little one’s arrival, carefully choosing décor and creating a nurturing environment. Capturing images in the nursery allows you to preserve those precious memories and celebrate the love and care you poured into this space. From tiny onesies hanging on the crib to the adorable stuffed animals arranged throughout the room, every detail tells a story worth remembering… including that special crib that is baby’s first bed until it gets replaced with their big kid bed.

While these rooms offer ideal setting for your in-home newborn sessions, they are not the only spots in the house where you can get stunning newborn photos. Any room can be utilized as long as you have good natural light available. Natural light not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your photos but also creates a soft and flattering ambiance. Look for rooms with large windows that allow plenty of sunlight to filter in, illuminating the space with warmth and beauty. Keep in mind that the quality of light can vary throughout the day so consider scheduling your session during the morning or late afternoon when the light is the softest while also avoiding direct sunlight coming through the window.

Remember, you don’t have to tidy up the entire house for your photo session. Focus on decluttering and preparing the key spots where you want photos captured. Clearing away any distractions will ensure that the focus remains on your family and the moments you share together. Take a page from this photographer’s book and hide the mess behind a closed door… If you don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. Right?!

Ultimately, the goal of an in-home newborn session is to capture the love, connection, and joy that fills your home. By choosing rooms that hold personal significance and are bathed in beautiful natural light, you can create images that truly reflect the warmth and authenticity of your family life. So, embrace the comfort of your own home, relax, and enjoy the company of those who mean the most to you. All you have to do now is get in touch to schedule your newborn session and I’ll take care of the rest when I see you on the other side of the lens!
