You know that feeling when you visit someone's website and the photos just feel a little... off? Maybe they're too stiff, or clearly pulled from a stock image site, or they look like they were taken a few years (and a few hairstyles) ago. It's hard to put your finger on it, but something just doesn't feel real.

If you're a small business owner, there's a good chance your own website might be giving off that same vibe right now. And I totally get it! Keeping your marketing images fresh and current while running a business is a lot to juggle.

That's exactly why I started offering branding memberships. And my most recent session with this violin teacher? It was the perfect reminder of why this kind of work is so rewarding... even when the day takes a completely unexpected turn.

Meet Abigail

Abigail runs a small business called Abellimento, where she teaches violin. Most of her classes are small group settings, with individual lessons for more advanced students. She also hosts bi-annual recitals for her students, which (spoiler alert) I get to photograph too!

When Abigail signed up for my branding membership, she had a clear goal: update her marketing images from the ground up. Her existing photos were either outdated or pulled from stock images online. Her previous headshots leaned more formal than she wanted, and none of it really captured her. The real, warm, working musician and teacher that she is.

We had strategy calls leading up to the session, mapped everything out, and felt really good going into it. And then... Friday afternoon happened.

Here's the thing about branding sessions… and honestly, about photography in general. You can plan beautifully and still find yourself pivoting at the last minute. That's not a failure. That's just real life!

We had planned to have some of Abigail's current students come in so I could capture her actually teaching. Working one-on-one, connecting with kids, doing what she does every day. But because the session fell on a Friday afternoon, no one was available. So we improvised!

My son and a couple of his friends from 4K (half-day school life, you know how it goes) stepped in as our student stand-ins. And honestly? It worked out better than I could have scripted. Those kids were a bundle of energy, which, if you've ever seen a real music lesson with young children, is about as true-to-life as it gets. The photos captured Abigail doing exactly what she does: engaging with little ones, guiding them, smiling through the beautiful chaos. It felt real because it was real.

What a Branding Membership Actually Looks Like

If you're a creative small business owner thinking about refreshing your marketing images, here's a little peek at what goes into a session like this and why a membership model might be worth considering.

It starts with strategy, not just showing up

  • Before we ever picked up a camera, we have calls to map out exactly what is needed from your session.
  • We talk about the variety of shots: casual headshots, action images of teaching, lifestyle-style photos that feel natural rather than stiff.
  • Going in with a plan (even a flexible one) makes all the difference.

Variety is everything for small business content

  • Stock images can only take you so far. Real photos of you doing your work build trust with your audience.
  • Many times that means getting a mix of tones: more relaxed headshots to replace the formal ones, plus authentic moments being in your element.
  • Having a range of images means you have content ready to go for your website, social media, and beyond.

Pivoting is part of the process

  • No session goes 100% according to plan, and that's okay.
  • When things change don't panic... we'll find a creative solution that still delivers exactly what you need.
  • A good branding session (and a good photographer) leaves room to adapt.

Memberships make it sustainable

  • One of the best things about branding memberships is that the magic doesn't stop with one session.
  • In this case, I'll be heading back to photograph Abellimento's student recital and that gallery will be a whole different kind of beautiful.
  • Breaking sessions up over the year means your content stays fresh, and it also breaks up the cost into a smaller monthly fee instead of one big chunk all at once.

Here's what I want creative small business owners to really hear: your photos are often the first impression someone gets of you and your work. They're what makes a potential client stop scrolling or click away.

You've put real time, energy, and heart into what you do. Your images should reflect that.

A branding membership isn't just about getting photos. It's about building a library of content that grows with your business and having a photographer in your corner who already knows your vision, your vibe, and your goals.

I cannot wait to continue working with Abellimento and close out her first membership year with a gallery full of her students' proud little faces. That's the kind of work that reminds me why I love this so much!

If you're a creative small business owner who knows your photos need a refresh or if you have events coming up that deserve to be documented well, a branding membership might be exactly what you're looking for.

It's a great fit if you: Are starting from the ground up with professional images, have recurring events (like recitals, pop-ups, or launches) you want captured, or want a consistent, fresh gallery without the pressure of one big session.

Head over to the website to learn more, or reach out and let's chat about what a membership could look like for your business. Because just like this session reminded me: even when the plan changes, the results can be something really special!
