Spring in Wisconsin is one of the most rewarding seasons for photography… if you can time it right! One day might be gray and chilly and the next we’re surrounded by warm sunshine and blooming trees. As a family photographer based in Greendale, WI, I look forward to this season every year. When spring finally makes its grand entrance, the local scenery is absolutely stunning—and perfect for capturing meaningful family memories!
If you’re considering a Spring family session this year, or any type of session this season, choosing the right location can make all the difference. Here are four of my favorite springtime photo spots, each offering something a little different depending on your vibe, the weather, and the backdrop you want for your family photos this year.
Whitnall Park Crab Apple Trees
Whitnall Park in Hales Corners is one of my go-to spots when the crab apple trees are in bloom—and trust me, when they are, it’s beyond gorgeous. The trees burst into mostly white blossoms (with a few pink blooms) and it creates a dreamy canopy fit for a fairytale. This is a wonderful backdrop for sweet, light-filled family photos. This spot works beautifully for families with children young or teenager, as the open space allows for room to roam while keeping things relaxed and beautiful. Timing is key though—these trees only bloom for about a week or two in early to mid-May so flexibility and quick booking are essential.

Magnolia Trees at Boerner Botanical Gardens
In a section of Whitnall Park, the Magnolia Collection at Boerner Botanical Gardens is perhaps my favorite spot to photograph families in springtime. These large, elegant flowers add a pop of soft color and sophistication to any photo session. This has become a bit of a local hot spot so if you’re willing to do a weekday session, you will have less foot traffic to avoid in the background. The magnolia trees tend to bloom earlier than other trees, so this is perfect if you’re hoping to catch spring’s first wave of color.

Seven Bridges Trails and Lake Views
If your family loves nature and a bit of adventure, Seven Bridges as part of Grant Park in South Milwaukee is a stunning choice. The winding trails, rustic bridges, and stone staircases make for fun, interactive photo spots. Best of all, the path eventually leads down to a quiet beach with view of Lake Michigan. The variety here is endless as you go from wooded areas to the wide-open beach location in just one session. Even when leaves haven’t quite budded on the trees, this location is still beautiful. Keep everyone moving and engaged at this location while capturing genuine, playful moments.

Trestle Park in Downtown Milwaukee
Not quite ready to count on spring blooms showing up for your photo session? If you want to play it safe with timing and go for a more modern feel, Trestle Park in Milwaukee’s Third Ward offers a totally different—but equally as beautiful—vibe. With its boardwalk-style paths, river views, and old railroad passing in the background, Trestle Park give your photos a clean, urban look with architectural flair. It’s a great option early in the season before nature fully wakes up or for families who just prefer a more polished, city-inspired setting. Plus, you’re within walking distance of coffee shops and restaurants if you want to turn your photo day into a quick family outing… especially if you’re all dolled up for pictures already.

Spring is short and sweet, just like the blossoms on the trees, and sessions fill up quickly once flowers begin to bloom. Whether you’re drawn to the flowering trees, adventurous hikes, or sleek charm of downtown, there’s a perfect location for every family. Or grab a Spring Mini Session for those quick updates to your family photos. Let’s capture the joy of the season—muddy boots, giggles, blooming trees, and all!
