Every year, around their birthday, something shifts. Maybe it’s subtle… a new gap-toothed smile or a little more confidence in the way they stand. Or maybe it’s big… losing the baby curls (I still get bummed when I think about my little man’s curls of days gone by), starting school, suddenly having opinions about what they wear. As a family photographer here in Greendale, WI, specializing in families with young children, I get a front-row seat to how quickly those changes happen. And let me tell you, it’s never slow.
In 2025, I introduced something new: quarterly Birthday Mini Sessions. The idea was simple. I wanted to give families an easy, meaningful way to celebrate their child each year without needing to book a full family session. A session where the spotlight could be entirely on the birthday kiddo, highlighting their personality, their quirks, their stage of life right now.
What I didn’t expect was how quickly families embraced it! The winter and spring quarters were such a hit. Parents loved that they could pop in for a short, fun session that didn’t feel overwhelming. Kids loved that it felt like something special just for them. And I loved delivering those galleries! All of toothy grins, shy smirks, twirls, serious faces, and everything in between. There is something incredibly powerful about photographing a child at the age they are currently in, right now, before the next season of growth begins.
As the year went on, summer and fall Birthday Minis naturally slowed down. I assumed families would opt for full family sessions instead… and many did. But what I realized is that Birthday Minis serve a completely different purpose. Even though I make sure to get individual photos of each kiddo during a family session, the focus is more to capture the connection of your whole crew. Birthday Minis freeze your child’s individual story at one specific age. Both matter. Both are valuable. They just tell different parts of your family’s story.
That’s why this year, my goal is simple:
follow through and offer Birthday Minis every single quarter!
We already had an incredible first quarter turnout, and it reminded me why this tradition deserves to stick around. There is something so special about lining up annual portraits and seeing the progression, from baby cheeks to big kid confidence. When you look back years from now, those images won’t just show how much they’ve grown physically. They’ll show who they were at five. At six. At seven. Their favorite expressions. The way they scrunched their nose when they laughed. The sparkle in their eyes when they talked about their latest obsession.
As parents, we’re always saying, “I just want to remember this stage.” Birthday Minis are a way to actually do that!
They’re short, stress-free, and designed with young kids in mind. There’s no pressure for siblings to cooperate. No need to coordinate full family outfits. Just your child, celebrated exactly as they are in this season of life.
