You just brought your baby home. The house is cozy, the light is soft, and somewhere in the back of your mind you're thinking “I want photos of this. Right now. Just like this.” Home newborn sessions are one of my absolute favorite things to photograph, because that sweet, sleepy, freshly-arrived energy is something worth freezing in time. But if you've been scrolling through newborn galleries and wondering how on earth those babies are all so perfectly curled up and drowsy... I'll be honest with you. It doesn't always go exactly that way. And that's completely okay!
Here's what I've learned after showing up for families in their most tender, exhausted, joyful postpartum days: a little preparation goes a long way, flexibility is your best friend, and the memories you'll have at the end of the session are worth every unpredictable moment in between.
Every parent comes into a home newborn session hoping for those iconic sleepy baby shots: tiny fists curled up, eyes closed, the whole nine yards. And listen, I want that for you too! But every newborn session is a little different. Some babies cooperate beautifully. Others have opinions about being the center of attention (bold of them, honestly).
What matters most is that you walk away with images that capture your little one exactly as they are, right now, in this brand-new chapter of your family's story. Whether baby is blissfully asleep or wide-eyed and curious, those photos are going to mean everything to you someday.
This is where a little strategy makes a big difference.
Here's my real approach to setting your session up for success.
Give Baby a Bath That Morning
A warm bath before your session helps calm and relax baby before I even arrive. Think of it as a little reset button; it can help soothe them and signal that something cozy is coming. It's a small step that can make a surprisingly big difference in how settled baby feels when we get started.
Time That Last Feeding Carefully
Feeding baby before the session is crucial. A full belly means a drowsy baby, and a drowsy baby means we have a real shot at those sleepy, snuggly moments everyone loves.
Here's the timing tip I always share: aim to finish feeding so you're done about 10 minutes before your session starts. That way, when I arrive, baby is drowsy but not fully asleep yet. We'll wrap baby up, give them a little time to settle into the wrap, and then ease into capturing those precious new moments together.
Expect the Unexpected (and Release the Pressure)
Even with the bath and the perfectly timed feeding, sometimes baby just won't sleep. And that's okay! Even if we start out with a few wide-eyed photos, once baby relaxes into the calm of the session, there's a real possibility of getting those sleepy shots too. Either way, you're going to have beautiful images of your little one that you'll treasure forever.
Now this is the part I really want every family to hear before they start stressing about logistics: You do not need to go out and buy props or special wraps!
I bring everything with me. My props, my wraps, all of it! Your only job is to get yourselves and baby ready, stay as calm as you can during the session (babies pick up on our energy), and soak in this beautiful, fleeting time of growing your family. That's it. Really.
I want your home session to feel like a breath of fresh air, not another item on an already overwhelming postpartum to-do list. You've got enough going on. Let me handle the rest!
Here's the thing about newborn photos… you will never get this time back. Not this exact weight in your arms, not those tiny features, not the way your older kids (if you have them) looked at the baby on day seven. My memory isn't perfect, and I'm guessing yours isn't either. Photos are how we go back and relive the chapters that passed too fast.
I got into photography because of my own family and because I know firsthand how quickly those early days blur into weeks and months and eventually years. I want to give you something lasting, something real, and something that looks like your family… not a filtered, over-edited version of it. My editing style stays true to color with a light, creamy finish. I want your photos to feel timeless, not trendy.
If you're expecting or you just brought your little one home and you're thinking “yes, I need this,” I'd love to hear from you. Home newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, flexible, and genuinely fun (even in those bleary-eyed, beautiful early days).
