If you’ve ever stood behind a camera and caught that moment - the one where everyone forgets you’re there and just melts into each other - you know exactly what I’m about to talk about.

There was a newborn session I photographed that started off anything but dreamy. The baby girl had just come back from the doctor and, let’s just say, she was not in the mood to be snuggled, swaddled, or styled. And yet, that session gave me one of my favorite images to date - mom and dad curled together on a piano bench, dad gently playing variations of lullabies, and baby (finally) resting between them. No fancy poses, no studio lights. Just love, music, patience, and faith - wrapped up in one cozy scene.

That moment captures why I believe in connection-first newborn photography. Because we’re not just making portraits. We’re preserving the soul of your family.

I know the pressure new parents feel walking into a photo session. You’ve just had a baby, your routine’s upside down, everyone is a little tender, and the last thing you need is stress over how to “look perfect.” I’m here to wipe that pressure off your plate. I pride myself on not chasing trendy newborn poses or try to mold you into cookie-cutter setups that don’t feel like your family. Sure, we nab the “money shot” where everyone’s looking (grandparents love those!), but the real magic happens when families stop performing and start being.

Whether it’s nursing in between takes, wrangling toddlers who want five more snacks, or capturing the sweet way your pup rests their head on your lap mid-session - these are the unscripted moments that make your gallery uniquely yours.

Let’s dig into a few ways we can pose (or un-pose) to capture that connection you never want to forget.

1. Side-by-Side Snuggles - Couch Edition

Sometimes the most meaningful place in the house is that well-loved couch - pillows tossed aside, dog curled up in the corner, and the whole family stacked like cozy pancakes. When I guide families into this pose:

  • Baby is cradled in one parent’s arms.
  • The other parent snuggles up close, cheek to cheek, hand on baby’s back or foot.
  • Older siblings and pets? They’re welcome to pile in however they naturally want.

The key? Don’t look at me. Look at each other. That’s when the real smiles surface.

2. Hands Make the Heart

A simple but powerful pose: parents sit or kneel close with hands touching baby together. Maybe it’s both of you gently swaddling her or resting fingertips on her chest while she lies swaddled in a bassinet.

This works beautifully when you want to draw attention to baby’s tininess or feature your wedding bands, rosary beads, or heirloom items that carry meaning from your family’s story.

3. Musical Memories

For families with a shared passion - like the musical dad I mentioned earlier - let’s incorporate it! In that session, the family sat together at the piano bench while dad played variations of children’s songs. He was calm, she was radiant, baby was slowly soothed, and together, their story unfolded in front of me.

Don’t underestimate how powerful it is to build your session around a family ritual or talent. Even if the baby doesn’t cooperate for long, the experience becomes a memory itself.

4. Nose-to-Nose Moments

When everyone gets close in - I mean really close - something beautiful happens. I often ask parents to bring baby up between them and lean in until their foreheads or noses meet. No need for forced smiles.

Want the truth? It usually ends in giggles, sniffs, and a tiny baby sneeze. And I’m ready to capture every bit of it.

What I remember most from that musical newborn session wasn’t the lighting or positioning. It was the dad calming his baby with music - letting his love speak louder than any instruction I could give. I remember their little girl settling to sleep as mom gently cradled her, rosary in hand, grounded in her marriage, motherhood, and faith. These are the kinds of moments that speak louder than any Pinterest-perfect pose ever could.

So if you’re prepping for a newborn photo session and wondering how to “do it right,” let me ease your mind. The right pose isn’t the one copied from a magazine - it’s the one where your family is simply being. Laughing. Calming. Cuddling. Connecting.
