You know those fleeting moments in your day when you stop and think, “I wish I could bottle this up forever”? Maybe it’s your kid’s belly laugh while chasing the dog, or the way your partner reaches for your hand after a long day. Those moments (the unprompted, beautifully chaotic glimpses of connection) are exactly what I look for when photographing families!

One of my favorite sessions last fall said it all! This family walked in looking like they stepped straight out of a clothing catalog (bold colors, perfectly coordinated in a way that didn’t scream “everyone wear blue!”). Their toddlers were unsure at first, which is completely normal, but here’s the magic: mom and dad kept the energy fun and patient the entire time! Instead of hushing every wiggle or trying to force smiles, they let their kids be kids. And because of that, the warmth, connection, and joy just radiated in every frame. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence.

So today, I want to share some of my go-to photo ideas that really celebrate the love and togetherness in your family. Spoiler alert: no stiff poses allowed!

As a family photographer in the Greendale area, I get it… You want beautiful photos! Maybe even one with everyone looking at the camera for grandma’s fridge. But if there's one thing this Wisconsin girl has learned, it's that the moments in between those "say cheese" shots… They’re the heart of your story.

I’ve turned more than one toddler tantrum into a frame-worthy giggle fest and helped more than one hesitant dad leave saying, “Hey, that wasn’t so bad.” It all starts with letting go of the idea that photo sessions require perfect behavior, unmussed hair, or dogs that sit still on command.

Let’s make space for real moments instead. Here are five ideas to make your next session a celebration of love, laughter, and yep, maybe even a little chaos!

Let the Kids Call Some Shots (Yes, Really!)

Okay, hear me out before you break into a stress sweat. When you give kids even a tiny bit of decision making during a session (like picking a wildflower, choosing where to sit, showing off a silly pose) they go from camera-shy to completely lit up. They may not have control over much in their daily routine (relatable, right?), but a little freedom goes a long way!

Some of my favorite photos have come from letting kids lead the way in a field, twirl in a dress they picked, or even show me their best dinosaur impression. Real joy always wins over forced smiles!

Include a Moment Just for Mom and Dad

It can be easy to focus 100% on the kids (especially in those toddler-heavy years), but don’t forget that your relationship is the foundation of your family’s story.

I always sneak in a few frames of just mom and dad during family sessions, and hoo-boy, are these powerful. Whether it’s a quick forehead touch, dad sneaking a kiss, or a quiet laugh between poses, those mini-love moments remind your kids (and you) what it all started with. The best part? These aren’t stiff “prom photo” poses. I prompt connection, not perfection. One quick photo series with just the two of you helps everything feel even more authentic.

Say Yes to the Silliness

Kids aren’t statues, so why do we expect them to sit still the whole time?

One of my best tips for photos that really show connection: lean into the movement! Let them run to you for a hug, swing them between you, or play your favorite game of “tickle monster.” Those genuine belly laughs, windblown curls, and spontaneous high-fives are the moments that will make your heart burst looking back at your photos. Bonus: movement helps with short attention spans (for kids or spouses!).

Capture the Chaos Calmly

Here’s a secret: not every photo needs to be full of big action or noise. Some of the most meaningful shots happen in the quiet pauses.

Like the way your little one curls into your chest, or the way your partner wraps an arm around your waist without thinking about it. These micro-moments, where everyone breathes together before the next wild moment hits? That’s where the calm within the chaos shows itself. And oh, is it beautiful.

It’s easy to worry.. Is this going to be stressful? Will we get at least one good photo?

Trust me, you will! Because good doesn’t mean perfect. It means real.

Capturing your connection as a family isn’t about putting on a performance. It’s about creating a space where laughter, movement, and togetherness naturally unfold. Whether it’s in a wildflower field, a cozy corner of your living room, or a windy afternoon at a nearby park. When you let go just a little and trust the process, the love your family already shares shines through in the most honest, heartwarming ways.
